The name derives from the pre-existing noun turret, from the French "touret", diminutive of the word "tower", meaning a self-contained protective position which is situated on top of a fortification or defensive wall as opposed to rising directly from the ground, in which case it constitutes a tower.Ĭupolas The commander's cupola of a Conqueror tank with a machine gunĪ small turret, or sub-turret set on top of a larger one, is called a cupola. The protection provided by the turret may be against battle damage, the weather conditions, general environment in which the weapon or its crew will be operating. They may be manned or remotely controlled and are most often protected to some degree, if not actually armoured. Rotating turrets can be mounted on a fortified building or structure such as a coastal blockhouse, be part of a land battery, be mounted on a combat vehicle, a naval ship, or a military aircraft, they may be armed with one or more machine guns, automatic cannons, large- calibre guns, or missile launchers. Modern warships have gun-mountings described as turrets, though the "protection" on them is limited to protection from the weather. By the early 20th century, these hoods were known as turrets. In the 1890s, armoured hoods (also known as "gun houses") were added to barbettes these rotated with the platform (hence the term "hooded barbette"). Barbettes were an alternative to turrets with a barbette the protection was fixed, and the weapon and crew were on a rotating platform inside the barbette. When this meaning of the word "turret" started being used at the beginning of the 1860s, turrets were normally cylindrical. Rotating gun turrets protect the weapon and its crew as they rotate. A modern gun turret is generally a rotatable weapon mount that houses the crew or mechanism of a projectile-firing weapon and at the same time lets the weapon be aimed and fired in some degree of azimuth and elevation (cone of fire). Loading of ammunition is also often done by automatic mechanisms.Ī gun turret (or simply turret) is a mounting platform from which weapons can be fired that affords protection, visibility and ability to turn and aim. The part bottom 2 has a hole for powering any electronics you put inside, but I have not printed it.This article needs additional citations for verification. There is plenty of space to put electronics inside and in the gun barrels you can put 5mm LEDs. The legs require 3mm aluminium sheet metal and 4mm stainless steel rods, the guns and side panels are supported by an 115mm long aluminium tube 8mm in diameter. Many parts require supports as you can only optimize so much before taking away too much and altering the look too much, only two wires on the middle part were removed and the bottom part was redesigned to fit the legs from the moving turret design. I recommend printing the guns with the barrels pointing up and it gave me a nice result. The parts are not oriented into the optimal orientation for printing but all have a flat face to be printed from. The shell, dividers and the side panels have holes for 1.75mm filament as locating pins. There are extra parts for the guns that have been made with extra clearance, and the split ammo box for gluing to the shell. I made it from screen shots from in the game and some things are optimized or removed to be printable. This is a 40cm high static model with room for electronics, it is the same size as this movable tracking model from which also contains instructions on how to make the metal legs:
